cDVDs vs. Ebay - Who will come out on top!

I’ve mentioned Pink Ffloyd before, perhaps even more than once, but they’re a band very close to my heart and when I am not in front of my computer you can usually find me walking to the office listening to the epic Comfortably Numb (either singing along or playing the track’s outstanding guitar solo with an invisible guitar).

Now, this band is especially close to my heart as I remember watching the Pulse DVD on a wonky VHS with my Dad and brother around ten years ago now, and being enthralled by the lightshow, visuals and guitar solos. I absolutely love this live show, and only wish I was old enough to have had the chance to attend it, but at least I’ve seen a recording, which reminded me to get another copy, but this time on DVD, which I’ve been meaning to for sometime.

Out of curiosity, I decided to see if I could get my hands on a second hand copy so my first port of call was obviously Ebay and new copies were being sold for an average of about £10.

I then sorted the auctions by Price (lowest first), and again the average price was around £10.

Even the Ebay shops were charging an average of around £12.99 and once again, excluding postage and packing.

However, and please excuse my bias, I then had a look at the DVD section of cDVDS.co.uk and the Pulse DVD, at the time of writing, was available from 21 retailers and from only £7.99 – which includes postage and packing!

So, in this instance, buying second hand DVDs really isn’t the most efficient option and with the fiercely competitive market for new DVDs there are always bargains to be had – you just need to know where to look.

Radio 1 Established 1967 - A suitable Christmas Reward

This album has certainly made me feel a little bit better when I consider the true cost of this month’s festivities, coupled of course, with the adverse weather I’ve just experienced on the way to get some coffee. And with this, I thought just a few days earlier I would buy myself a present. A kind of “well done for getting your Christmas shopping done, wrestling with the tree and actually not eating all of the candy canes and chocolate coins that have taken their positions around the house”.

The latest offering from Radio 1, of Live Lounge fame, was to be the reward. The 2 CDs are crammed with modern ‘reinterpretations’ of classic tracks from the likes of Elton John (covered by the Street’s Mike Skinner) to David Bowie, Roxy Music and The Jam.

Is all modern music rubbish rendering the evolution of the album to one of covers? Perhaps… but then again, perhaps not…. 1967 is as much of a celebration of this music, a rebirth than a mere commercial exploitation, and it’s certainly one I am happy to have got my hands on.

Looking to buy a Wii this Christmas? Well that might be tough as retailers are struggling to keep up with demand.

In our new section, entitled "The Battle of the Games Consoles" we mentioned that the Nintendo Wii was the worlds most popular console with more Wiis in the world than any other current console. And with this demand, retailers just cannot keep up.

In 2006 the BBC reported in their technology section of the frustration of gamers, and with Christmas '07 only weeks away, one can only hope that the distribution issues of last year get sorted out.

Retailers have been reported to cancel and refund order that they cannot honour, but that doesn't help the christmas shopper looking for the "worlds most popular console".

Sisi from ITV's X Factor - Booted out... ah shame.

Sisi who was put into Hope (one of the bands formed from rejected solo singers by judges Simon Cowell and Louis Osborne), was booted out on Saturday following revelations that she could be arrested on live TV if cops saw her perform on future shows.

The South London girl is wanted for failing to finish her community service after being convicted of assault on a McDonald's worker, and after having the unfortunate experience of watching her over the course of the auditions it was hardly surprising that the charge would be assault.

You have to marvel at the wasted opportunity… getting to the final 3, only to be booted out, but of course, if this news of the world article is anything to go by, we can surely expect Sisi to milk her 15 minutes dry…

Feist - The Reminder

Feist is an artist getting a bit of attension recently, but it's only a shame the rest of us didn't hear about her early. The Reminder, is her third full-length album, and its one I get involved with after hearing my tune of the summer which was the Boys Noize remix of My Moon My Man (which I've included at the end of this post). Every time I hear it, the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end...

Expect really big things from this album, with tracks including 1,2,3,4 and especially the video appearing like they should belong on an advert for Gap - but don't let that get in the way of this outstanding feel good album, which is already charting as one of our 10 most popular CDs this week with prices starting at just £5.99!!!

CGI, Pixar and Ratatouille

To tie in with the release of Pixar’s new title – Ratatouille - which sees wannabe chef ‘Remy’ the Rat team up with calamitous cook Liguini, we thought we would take a moment to chart the history of Pixar’s CGI titles.

But what does CGI mean?
In its basic form, CGI stands for Computer-generated imagery, however this simply does not give CGI justice. Especially with the immense development of CGI that we’ve seen over the last ten years.

Over the passed 12 years CGI ‘creator’ Ed Catmull and directory John Lasseter have helped Pixar generate almost $4bn at the box office, with the following titles:

1. Toy Story (1995) Box Office: $360.1m
“Cowboy Woody is put out by the arrival of new toy Buzz Lightyear”

2. A Bug’s Life (1998) Box Office: $361.8m
“Flik the ant recruits a bug army to defeat some hostile grasshoppers”

Don’t despair if it still hasn’t arrived yet as with the current Royal Mail strike from the Communications Workers Union (CWU) has announced that normal service will resume by next Thursday, the 11th of October.

A statement on the Royal Mail website reads:

“The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has announced further strike action. Two 48-hour strikes are planned. The first will begin at lunchtime on Thursday 4th October and ends at lunchtime on Saturday 6th October. The second will begin in the early hours of Monday 8th October, ending in the early hours of Wednesday 10th October. Whilst deliveries will recommence on Wednesday 8th October, we anticipate it may take some time before normal service resumes”.

Let hope this all gets straighten out and normal service can resume as soon as possible, I’m not sure I can wait!

This is what John Lennon (right) looked like during his teenage years. The 17-year-old Beatles legend is accompanied by his friend Nigel Walley. The photo, taken in 1958 and locked away in a cupboard for almost 50 years, emerged after an anonymous Beatles collector who bought the image at auction came forward.

Radiohead Inrainbows

There has been a lot of hype this week about Radiohead not bothering signing with a record label but instead releasing their new album “Inrainbows” themselves, which is currently only available on pre-order from their website http://www.inrainbows.com/

They’re offering both a digital download and a discbox (a disc box being the new album on CD and vinyl, plus a second CD with more new songs) priced at £40 and will be posted on or before 3rd December, however I am sure you will find, like we have, that it is impossible to complete the transaction.

Despite all of the hype, including national radio promotion and a domain forwarding from the core Radiohead website one might question whether this is merely a a demonstration of non-conformity. Do Radiohead not want us to buy their music? or not want corporations to sell it? Because if they did, surely they would make the website more accessible, make the shopping cart more simple, and perhaps do away with the psychedelic graphic which is eating up bandwidth and causing web browsers to slow right down.

Or perhaps this is all a scam? Perhaps the Radiohead site has been hacked, and is merely a Phishing scam? Whatever it is, I hope they are able to do something about it, and soon, so we can start to enjoy whatever Radiohead are about to put out.

Eight Brand new animated adventures with Shaun from the award winning creators of Wallace and Gromit.

5. Factory Girl – Sienna Miller / Guy Pearce
Miller plays a (surprisingly) fantastic role as New York socialite Edie Sedgwick who befriends Andy Warhol and is subsequently made a movie star. What follows in this fictionalized story is her ultimate demise. Excellent casting. We recommend.

6. Casino Royale – Daniel Craig and Eva Green
Introducing both James Bond before he holds his license to kill and Daniel Craig as the new Bond, Casino Royale (Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel) ditches the cheesy lines of earlier films and opts for a smoother and more ‘professional’ stance, that reminds me of BBC’s Spooks. Expect fast cars, free running and lots of high tech gadgets!

What we are listening to and feeling this week… thank god it’s Friday…

1. Boys Noize - Oi Oi Oi: Aggressive dirty electro from a guy who usually shares the bill with heavyweights like Soulwax, Felix and other left of the centre dance DJs and producers. Although reminiscent of early Daft Punk this is nothing new, but still working casting your ear over.

2. Various Artists - Ibiza Rocks: A 2 CD set featuring acts who’ve graced Ibiza Rocks the annual indie festival come beach party in San Antonio Bay.

3. Bob Sinclar – Live at a Playboy Mansion: A 2 CD compilation mixed by French jock Bob Sinclar (World Hold On, The Beat Goes On) which is Mixmag’s compilation of the month (October). Except 4/4 house beats, in a typical defected style.

4. Foo Fighters – Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace: Do we need to look any further than Q Magazine who proclaim “Foo Fighters have delivered their best album. This surely is their moment”. Get on board for Alt-rock of stadium-sized proportions.

5. Mia – Kala: Bold, brilliantly worldly beats from Britain’s own ‘political pop star’. Sometimes it doesn't need a huge review.

6. Hard-Fi – Once Upon a Time in The West: Rousing rock sing-alongs including the awesome Suburban Knights.... You know who you are.

7. Justice – The cross: We’ve mentioned this before in our CD Inspire section, but this is still a very special album for us, a little hard at times, and nothing ground breaking, but still doing it. Think Daft punk vs Micheal Jackson vs Shandy Sandwich and you’re almost there, but not quite.

Taking the last 7 days away from an internet connection allowed me to do many things, including read the Sunday times cover to cover (plus supplements) in addition to Dave Vice’s fantastic “The Google Story” (which charts the rise and rise of the web’s favourite search engine) and Tescopoly by Andrew Simms (which has certainly caused a great deal of considerations as to my global/local outlook).

The last 7 days have also enabled me to relax and really put pen to paper and start to really plan elements of the cDVDs.co.uk site and it’s future.

A sad day indeed, as the great Luciano Pavarotti sadly passes away.

Please enjoy the following video, of his famous performance of "nessun dorma" this time at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics - which is absolutely sensational.
We have mentioned Paul Potts in our blog, but Pavarotti I am affraid is in a league of his own.

HMV's new logo - oooo... swanky!

You might have noticed, you might not have - but HMV have had a rebrand.... it's nothing major... or is it?

Having dropped the capital letters, which could be argued are quite aggressive - but of course when allied to bubblegum pink, they are like a biker in a pair of hot pants.

But having been in business since 1921 you would think it was about time to ditch Nipper the dog and inject some viagra into the logo, and think, with the new design, they have achieved this. The lower case letters, the near stencil like image of Nipper listening to the gramophone and the trademark pink. A excellent, but subtle evolution.

Of course it's arguable whether, when it comes down to it, the branding really matters - but this shuffle has brought with it some great offers available at their website

Finding a CD you thought you had forgotten about....

Don't you just love it when you are having a clear out, or perhaps sorting out your DVD collection and you stumble upon something that you'd forgotten about, something so specially that you question how it ever got lost.

Albums like Kruder and Dorfmiesters the K&D sessions, and, from today, I rediscovered 'Dub Side of the Moon' by Easy Star All-Stars. Originally released on 28 April 2003, 'Dub Side of the Moon' is a Reggae Tribute to Pink Ffloyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' with fantastic covers that would have Mark Ronson wishing he had got there first.

The track listing mimic that of Ffloyd's album but with a dub reggae sound system thrown in for good measure.

In Germany on August 17, 1982 the first ever CD rolled off the presses at the Philips factory near Hannover, not even the Philips staff could foresee how these small discs would revolutionise entertainment.

Stephanie van den Berg offers an indepth review on Yahoo News, however whilst some are sceptical whether the CD will make it past it's 30th Birthday, with the surge in digital music downloads, Paul Solleveld of the Dutch organisation for the entertainment industry NVPI think there will always be a place for the CD....

Max Power at the movies - The Transformers Movie

Max Power magazine is what was brought to mind as I sat through Transformers at the cinema last night. Having been charged £6.80 for a pleasure I had hoped that the cartoon adaptation would be worth waiting for, but not the cheesy line/ plot ensemble that as far as I am concerned wasted my evening.

Have you ever bitten a metal spoon? Horrible feeling isn’t it? Well with the continuous metal on metal transformer fight sequences you will probably, like me, need a lay down to recover.

A heard a review from BBC Radio 1’s James King that Transformers was about cars and breast, and it was exactly that….

The following statements sum it up for me.
1. Needy Boy
2. Glamour Model
3. Fast Cars

I am sure you will agree…. Max Power all over….

The movie can be praised for it’s special effects, but it’s just a shame that more attention wasn’t paid to the weaker areas of the film, particularly if tickets are going to hover around £7 a go. But of course, with it being the summer holidays, will kids be happy with anything?

One question remains as I reflect on the cheesy one-liners from main goodformer Optimus Prime… shame on you, but was the cartoon always this bad? Or am I viewing them in rose tinted spectacles?

Spiderpig (genus spiderous piggus). Extremely rare and found in Springfield . Only known living example owned by a Homer J. Simpson. The fruit of a genetic experiment gone horribly wrong, it is mildly venomous. It spins webs like a spider and typically can be found in the living room.

Is Spiderpig the greatest piece of viral? Having seen more people talk about it, laugh about it and play the clip on local and national radio, it would be no surprise to hear whether spider pig gets his own show or perhaps a greater feature in future Simpson's shows.

One thing is certain, and that is that the song "Spider Pig, Spider Pig, does whatever a Spider Pig Does...." is going to be heard a lot this summer...

Long running Brighton nightclub, which was renamed Union last year, only to be renamed back to the Zap has been sold, and in a move which will undoubtedly shake up Brighton club land and rival nights at Audio, we can only be thankful that pervious owner C-Side are not in charge!

If Digital Brighton, is going to be anything like Digital Newcaslte then we are in for a treat, with their trademark Funktion One Sound systems and consistent booking of good quality nights.

A concern of course being financial sustainability? will Digital have to welcome the midweek mass market just to stay afloat?

Compare: Calvin Harris - I Created Disco

It appears that you can't go anywhere withour hearing the infectious "Acceptable in the 80's" from scottish electronic artist Calvin Harris, and despite being somewhat cheesy and pop friendly he has maintained a solid reputation as a producer and artist.

Whilst concern has been aired that his debut single would be one hit wonder, his album "I Created Disco" and earlier release "The Girls", certainly put an end to speculation.

I Created Disco - titled to provoke a reaction of "no he didn't", is the debut album from Harris and it's clear influences range from the likes of Prince, Daft Punk and LCD soundsystem.

It was released in the UK on the 18th June 2007 and features the following tracks:

At 6.25 this evening something with our hosts happened..... possible conclusions range from the new labrador chewing through the power cables, an afternoon tea spillage or merely server overload which has results in many sites including cDVDs.co.uk being inaccessible.

Gladiator - One of my favourite films

Gladiator (2000) - Directed by Ridley Scott and staring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix – will always remain one of my most favourite action films.
Portraying the life of betrayed general Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe) by Commodus (Phoenix), who, in his ambition to be Emperor, murders his father, seizes the throne and condemns Maximus to slavery.

The film, set to a beautiful classical and often in periods energetic soundtrack, following the rise of Maximus through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and his Emperor.

Having won a Golden Globe Award for “Best Original Score - Motion Picture” amongst the other 36 individual ceremonies that Gladiator was nominated in, including the 73rd Academy Awards, the BAFTA Awards and the Golden Globe Awards one can truly grasp the impact of this film. Research has indicated that out of 119 award nominations, the film won 48 prizes….. outstanding!

Record/ book store Fopp = Closed

Record/ book store Fopp went into administration on Friday, closing 81 stores across the country, citing lack of financial support:

There website fopp.co.uk merely states their great regret as they announce the closure.

“Our store chain is profitable, well regarded and loved by our loyal customers and staff. However we have failed to gain the necessary support from major stakeholders, suppliers and their credit insurers to generate sufficient working capital to run our expanding business…
We would like to thank staff and customers for their support over the past 25 years”

It is yet another loss for bricks-and-mortar record shops as retailing goes from strength to strength online…. Is this just a taste of things to come? Or is offshore operation the key to remaining competitive?

Film Classifications - What do they mean?

According to the independent regulator of the film and video industry in the UK, the British Board of Film Classification, current film classifications are as follows:

U – Suitable for all
PG – Parental Guidance Necessary / Some scenes may be unsuitable for children
12 – Suitable for persons 12 years and older
15 – Suitable for persons 15 years and older
18 – Suitable for persons 18 years and older

Do you think that such classifications are out dated? Has our acceptance been fundamentally altered by the main stream media including Big Brother’s explicit language, murder on Eastenders and scene of a sexual nature on Hollyoaks?

Perhaps the classifications no longer mean anything, and besides, will those under 18, 15 or 12 simply get to watch the films anyway by getting the parents to rent or buy them?

Whilst of course we must all live by these broad classifications, maybe a five star rating detailing the level on sex, strong language and violence (or that which might offend) on a DVD cases would be a better indicator, if that is of course you wish to censor what you or others watch….

Digital Downloads? Are we downloading a poor deal?

Despite the popularity of digital downloads and the ease of the iTunes interface it is the issue of intangibility that predominantly lends me to traditional forms of purchasing music.

Of course when purchasing CDs –as opposed to digital content- we must factor in the time to fill out our address details or perhaps the postage and packaging cost, however isn’t there something to be enjoyed about a tangible collection of music? A collection you and your friends can flick through? Or even lose in a box when you move house only to find some years later?

Digital music, like digital photographs can get forgotten about – starring at you right there on your screen and ultimately destined to a demotion in sub-folder.

In addition one might consider the issue of file corruption, computer thief or merely the time in your life when you update your PC or Mac… will all or part of your investment in digital music be lost? Will your house insurance cover such downloaded content? And how much will this digital collection set you back?

Apple has recently been reported to the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) by the Consumer Association highlighting that the current position of iTunes in the UK is possibly in breach of European law. Under Euro law all consumers in all member states should enjoy the same benefits that the single market brings, however with UK downloads costing anyway upwards of 79p per track whilst in Germany and France the cost is around 67.7p there is of course an uneven playing field. One might think they can simply visit the German or French site, however it one cannot provide an address in each of these countries then I am afraid you will be charged the UK rate.

But for 79p per track, are we not to question the value?

If you want to purchase individual tracks or merely get a taste of a particular album then of course music download site have there merits, but with digital albums in many instances costing the same as the tangible album isn’t it worth getting more for your money, if only for the artwork of the album and a nice protective case….

I look toward my record collection as I write this blog entry wondering if one day I will ever treasure my folders and sub folders that make up my digital collection…. Yet I am not sure I will. But lets hope a decision is reached with regard to EU legislation and prices of UK music downloads including that of iTunes -who are not the only culprits-, so we all get better value for money… and ultimately more music!

7 Ages of Rock: Pink Floyd

Once again we are looking back, now only to our childhood but that of our parents. The ‘Seven Ages of Rock’ series aired on Channel 4 has rediscovered some right video gems with performances from Bowie/ Ziggy Stardust, The Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, The Hendrix Experience and Pink Floyd.

It is with Pink Floyd that we would like to direct this blog entry, focusing upon an amalgamation of their audio-visual performances and sampling that stretches right up to the present day with covers and remixes from Scissor Sisters and Eric Prydz.

Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ tour is of predominance within one of the “Seven ages” documentaries, where a wall is gradually erected between the audience and the band, sought to represent the alienation felt by the band who felt their music was evolving away from their original experimental roots as a result of their increasing fame.

Illustrations and animations were then projected onto the wall, which culminated in its destruction.

‘Pulse’ is a live recording from their Earl’s Court concert inn 1994 and is available on both CD and DVD. In Typical Floyd style the ‘Pulse’ DVD features an outstanding audio-visual display of lasers, videos and animations set against a backdrop of timeless records including ‘Breath’, ‘Money’, and ‘Another brick in the wall’.

In mentioning timelessness, Pink Floyd’s music has been sampled on numerous occasions, non more recent that the 2006 rerub titled ‘Proper Education’ by Eric Prydz…… what a great band indeed.

New Release: Apocalypto, Mel Gibson (2006)

Mel Gibson's latest offering "Apocalypto" about the internal destruction of the Mayan civilization is in the shops now. Whilst reservations might be cast towards Gibson's ideological stance, particularly in light of news reports that found him drunk at the wheel of a car and being abusive about the Jewish faith the film carries immense main stream appeal with great effects and an epic cast to rival the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Although not ground breaking film by any stretch of the imagination, it's well worth a look should the sun goes behind the clouds.

The Worst Album?

Only in our opinion of course, but we are to go out on a limb and cast judgement on what we believe to be the worst commercial pop album in existence. We choose the term ‘commercial’ as it is not a release that blends in with the other releases or indeed goes quietly, but it is one that is constantly promoting on prime time television slots in addition to booming out of stationary modified cars, outside branches of Halfords up and down the country.

This blog entry was stimulated in part by having to endure the hard dance 4/4 beats of Cascada via a mobile phone speaker from some helpful fello on the back seat of the bus today, luckily however, it was only a short journey, but perhaps we should have given him the Krafty Kuts CD we had just bought, would that have pointed him in the right direction for next time?

Cascada perhaps fits in with the ‘sex orientated’ approach to music, merely an object of marketing, conforming to the dominant expectation of attractive women, particularly so in leotards and sweatbands much like the Eric Prydz ‘Call on Me’ video, but are we merely to accept anything as long as it is packaged with fake tan, Hollywood hair and gym membership?

But then who are we to judge? Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it still remains that there is so much ‘quality’ music out there, and indeed a wide range of genres; it is only beyond me that, in the words of Banksy…. “I can’t believe you morons actually buy this….”
Casada is not a bad singer mind, it’s only a shame she can’t lose the drums….. but are we missing the point?

East 17- 'Outside is raining but inside is wet'

Oh how we laughed at the East 17 reunion documentary screened on Channel 4 last night, questions were asked as to whether 10 years had really past as they hadn't changed one bit.

East 17 certainly put the 'Chav' in the charts, but how were they to, as they hoped, take on the likes of Take That, particularly after only a gig at Shepherd's Bush Empire followed by a night club appearance without lead song writer Tony Mortimer. Such a 'reunion' pails in insignificance when considering the media hype and associated scramble for tickets for Barlow et al.

The East 17 documentary however, was riddled with humour. The ongoing banter between Mortimer and disgraced band member Brian Harvey, following comments on a radio interview that Harvey condoned class A drug use, which ultimately was responsible for the groups demise.

Suffice to say, the documentary did evoke memories of bomber jackets, oversized hats, boiler suits and theatrical records including 'Let it Rain', 'Stream' and 'Alright'.... and whilst the reunion gig crowd was made up of twenty-somethings rekindling childhood memories they again reminded me that at the time the records were popular, and in some instances well written.

Who can forget the 1994 Christmas number one 'Stay Another Day' or perhaps 'Gold'... another great record, I guess the documentary and the hopes of a come back go, like their discography must remain on the shelf, only to look back on in future and say.... at the time they were good.

Festival De Cannes

Kicking start the blog only days after Cannes film festival, it is just a shame that we were not able to mingle on the red carpet and rub shoulders, not with independant film makers, but it appears, the rest of Hollywood and associated PR agencies who sought to use the festival as a 'platform' to plug the lastest Disney movie.

All things aside, Cannes has brought a wide genre of films to the spotlight of us who can only gaze at the television screeen over the 12-day fiesta on the French Riviera, but as Romanian film '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' by Cristina Mungiu scooped the Pal'me D'Or (the Golden Palm) we can only look forward to its general release.

But still, until then, there is always the ever growing catalogue of DVDs, it is only a question of whether we have the time to watch them all. Building up like a collection CDs, it is always nice to look back at old DVDs, especially when considering the inclimate weather the south east of England is currently experiencing.... um.... 12 days on the French Riviera does seem very appealing..
